Training for volunteers working with children, young people and families

A dynamic course for those who want to serve the next generation

In 2026 Chelmsford Diocese will welcome their third cohort of Catalyst students. This course run through Ridley Hall in Cambridge helps students to develop their practice in their own context whilst learning together with others. The topics covered included children, young people and learning, culture, discipleship and inclusion.



Catalyst cohorts 2024 and 2025

Catalyst is for:

  • Those who want to be equipped, empowered and resourced to serve the next generation.
  • Those who want to be a catalyst for change in our churches and communities.
  • People with a range of experience, from new volunteers to paid children and youth workers.

You will gain:

  • New knowledge and skills to lead children and young people.
  • An understanding of the Christian faith and a deeper ability to relate this to your role.
  • Partnerships with others, both locally and nationally.
  • A chance to explore further study.
  • An option to complete an assignment and gain 20 credits at level 4 qualification.

Catalyst includes:

  • Five sessions of locally held learning groups.
  • A 3-day conference held at the Hayes Conference Centre, Derbyshire.
  • A regional induction day.
  • Access to digital resources and learning activities to complete in your own time.
  • A graduation day in Cambridge.

Final presentations

As part of the course students are required to complete a presentation about youth and families ministry in their own context. They also join other Catalyst students from across the country at a residential weekend, which for this cohort was held at Swanwick.

Catalyst has been fully funded by the Church of England and is a part of the 30K project which aims to bring about change to raise up 30,000 new children and youth leaders by 2030.
